I keep getting the sense that she somehow is aware of her own thoughts and feelings over time yet she always seems so surprised as if she has not the slightest inkling of what's going on—nor much joy in it.
I just re-read your comment, Zoë. Cally's problem is that she is still thinking like a knight. And in her world, though knights might venture into the world of the intuitive, they don't fare adjust very well. It's all about duty and honor and also about the practicality of handling a sword. Cally allowed herself to be happy just before she left Broceliande, but she needs to grow into her skin. She's also going to have to be satisfied with not knowing all the answers.
